Thai Airways est. 1960 is a flag carrier of Thailand based in Chatuchak District, Bangkok with focus cities of Chiang Mai, Phuket, Taipei-Taoyuan, Hong Kong and Seoul-Incheon. It also is the biggest shareholder (39%) of Nok Air, a low cost airline. It also owns a regional carrier “Thai Smile” that has services in Southeast Asia and Indian subcontinent. Originally co-owned by Sweden-based Scandinavian Airlines and Thai Airways Company, the service was initially geared by the expatriates however, it slowly and steadily slipped into the hands of domestic workforce. After the governments bought out of 15% of SAS stake in the carrier, the domestic and international wings of the airline were merged to create Thai Airways International. The company relocated its hub operations to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport in 2006. Phuket, Chiang Mai, Hong Kong and other cities also came into focus in 2000s. Thai incurred a major loss in late 2000s because of the global economic crisis, high fuel costs and prevailing political crisis in the country. With some reevaluation and revolutionized measures the carrier was put on track in 2009 with a net profit of 2.5 billion Thai baht. Financial position of the airline is stable at present though, the company has borne the losses in the third quarter of 2013. However, the flight safety of the airline has never been up to mark with a number of unfortunate happenings including crashes and crash-landings.
