Thai Airways founded on March 29, 1960 is a Bangkok, Thailand based International Airlines operating from Suvarnabhumi Airport. The airline having a fleet size of 80 and bound to 91 destinations has the membership of Star Alliance. Origins of the airline date back to 1960 when a joint venture between Thai Airways Company and Scandinavian Airlines (SAS). 30% of the interest was taken by the Swedish airlines and remaining was owned by Thai Airways. Intent was to expand the airline from domestic to international. SAS was assisting the carrier in managerial, marketing, operational, training and other departments at the same time. By 1987 the foreign human resource was reduced to as less as one percent or even low. It had its first revenue flight on May 1, 1960. At start the services were offered to nine overseas Asian destinations from Bangkok. The carrier was airborne for its first intercontinental trip in 1971 using Douglas DC-8s with a flight to Australia followed by Europe. North American route was run in 1980.

A fleet of Douglas DC-10 was acquired in 70s to seal the intercontinental routes. Corporate identity of the service was completely changed when Thai government took the full control after acquiring SAS’s 15% stake in the company. Both domestic and international services were merged in April 1988 to form a single carrier following a decision taken by Prem Tinsulanonda. Shares were made public via Stock Exchange of Thailand on June 25, 1991. In May 1997 the service joined hands with United Airlines, Air Canada, Lufthansa and SAS to form Star Alliance, the first and largest in the world. Fleet renewals were made in 2000 and are still underwork in 2010s with expansions and more. You can find more about the carrier its past and modern history on the official site.
